Excellent digital artist's monitor July 23, 2009 Lemnibus (Denver, CO) 38 out of 39 found this review helpful
I bought the Dell 2209WA to replace my Hanns-G 199N 19" standard flatscreen. I create fantasy art using Photoshop and I need accurate color across the whole screen. The Hanns-G was an excellent monitor that displayed much like an HP LP1965, and I needed that same quality in a widescreen.
As a general rule of thumb, you get a TN panel for gaming because of the ultra refresh rate; you get an MVA panel for movies because of the truer blacks, and you get an IPS panel for graphics and art because of the consistent color. It turns out that the 2209WA's e-IPS panel (which is the budget version of IPS) is very close in quality to my excellent Hanns-G and the HP. The colors are rich and complex right out of the box. The one aspect that I can't match to my old monitor is the native contrast (I've never tried color calibration because my audience doesn't use it). I turned the brightness way, way down and the contrast to about 70, but the highlights in my paintings are still a little too bright. This is negligible though, and the color itself is excellent. Considering the price of any other 22" widescreen IPS monitor, I'm more than willing to live with a variance that only my eye will notice. BTW - I'm using the DVI connection.
I'm not a gamer, so I can't speak to the refresh rate or ghosting. You're on your own there.
Important note: this is a 16:10 ratio monitor, which means the widescreen dimensions are designed for computer use rather than watching movies. If you want to watch DVDs on your PC without a black stripe at the top and bottom, get a 16:9 ratio monitor. Also, this monitor has a matte screen to eliminate glare. This is critical for an artist or anyone serious about viewing art, but if you're used to a glossy, vibrant screen it'll seem drab.
The height of the display on this monitor is just a fraction less than the height of a regular 19" monitor. So if you're upgrading from a 19" standard flatscreen like I did, your eyes won't notice any vertical difference. You're basically taking a standard 19" and extending it into a widescreen.
Construction seems to be high quality, particularly the stand which adjusts via spring calibrated to the weight of the monitor itself. This works really nicely, and the stand installs and removes elegantly. The control panel is intuitive to me so no issues there. And I'm very pleased that this monitor doesn't pretend to have speakers. I also won't use the USB ports, but it has `em if you want `em.
My 2209WA arrived with no dead pixels, no backlight bleedthrough whatsoever, and no display irregularities. Very, very nice. I highly recommend, especially for serious digital artists on a budget.
Final notes: be sure when you purchase that you don't confuse this with the 2209W, which is NOT the same thing. If you want the e-IPS panel, you must get the WA model. And look for a sale. This can sometimes be found for under $300.
Need more of these on the market! August 1, 2009 D. Peters (USA) 21 out of 21 found this review helpful
I agree with the previous reviewer entirely.
I searched long and hard for a replacement for my aging Trinitron CRT. I do work with photographs and the normal inexpensive TN-based panels just did NOT suit my needs for true-color photo editing. *shudder* So, an expensive IPS or (P)VA monitor seemed the only way to go. But I'm also a gamer and fast response time is very important. The xVA panels just couldn't keep up, being a couple of frames behind at best! Had to have an IPS, then, but they cost $600 or more. So I waited. And waited. Finally I found this 2209WA with a new type of inexpensive eIPS panel for half that. This is so popular with enthusiasts that Dell keeps running out of stock. No, it's not a perfect monitor, but what it does do it does very well, and inexpensively.
* It's as fast as a TN and faster than some of Dell's own.
* It lacks good calibration ability, the backlight is WAY too bright, and there's no way to adjust it. Fortunately setting brightness=0 and contrast=50% gets you good enough for online work, though maybe not CMYK print work. 8-) You can get a little finer control with RGB intensities but not much. I find most of the "modes" on LCD monitors to be useless. Dynamic contrast defaults to off, YAY!
* It's not 16:9 (resolution 1680x1050) and so doesn't do HD video at 1080p with 1:1 scaling. Also no HDCP port, only VGA & DVI, but you can use it with a component-to-VGA adapter for HD from other devices. Many monitors won't do this.
* The stand is fully adjustable and can swivel, tilt, and pivot the screen between portrait and landscape. Verra nice!
* There's a handy built-in USB hub but it will go to sleep if your monitor does.
* The deep bevel may bother some people, though it doesn't bother me.
* Some people may prefer glossy screens, but I prefer this matte texture to avoid glare/reflections. * Power consumption at ~50W is about twice a similar-sized TN, but still way less than my Trinitron.
* Menus are clean and functional.
In short, this is by far the best 20-25 inch LCD monitor you can get for the money right now.
Great picture, great price September 3, 2009 Margaret (Wilmington, NC) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This monitor is a true break through. the eIPS technology makes an outstanding monitor available for a truly reasonable price. It was easy to install and has been working great for the month I've had it.
The colors are very true. It's a great monitor for amateur photo-editing. The screen easily rotates to allow easy viewing of portrait pages and photos.
The only downside is that Dell is having a hard time keeping up with sales and finding it was very difficult.
Great IPS monitor for the price September 2, 2009 TheDog (Atlanta, GA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought this off the Dell site for $225 on sale and I must say it blows my now 2nd monitor (Samsung) away on color accuracy. And I like my Samsung monitor, but no longer for photo editing.
In searching other IPS monitors I found this one to be the only one in a price range I could really afford. I'd like to see it up against the $600+ Apple Cinema Display, but I figure that at almost 1/3 the price, I'll stay here.
I'm using this for my side photography job so acurate colors were a must. It's well constructed and can be adjusted higher/lower as well as tilting forward and back.
I'd recommend this to anyone wanting an economical IPS monitor.
It is NOT TN-Panel December 25, 2009 J. Jshop (New York) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
In a word:
IT IS NOT a TN-PANEL!!!!!
What a huge difference from the crap TN-Panel monitor, which manufacture deliberately hide in the specification too shy to tell they monitors are TN-Panel.
